UK renewable technology energy targets are defined by the Merton Rule, named after the first local authority to include renewable technology in its unitary development plan:

"All new non-residential development above a threshold of 1,000 sqm will be expected to incorporate renewable energy production equipment to provide at least 10% of predicted energy requirements."

The policy has now been adopted by many local authorities across the UK, leading to a commonplace requirement for the utilisation of renewable technology in building projects. The UK Government has now made an addition in its national planning policy guidance (PPS22) confirming both the legality of such policies and its desire to see other boroughs emulate them.

Parker Wilson Sustain have undertaken feasibility studies related to implementing renewable technologies. Our dedicated team of CIBSE accredited Low Carbon Consultants can provide you with expert advice on which technologies are best suited to providing your building project with environmentally and economically effective renewable solutions.

Our responsibilities on previous projects have included:

. Feasibility studies for proposed renewable energy systems.

. Advisory reports on achieving renewable energy targets including building energy usage and renewable energy production modelling.

. Liaising with renewable systems manufacturers to obtain the ideal solution for individual building projects.

. Assisting negotiations with the planners to agree a final solution which is acceptable to both them and the developer.
